Director ID requirement for new, first-time directors

From 5 April 2022, new directors appointed for the first time must apply for their director ID prior to their appointment.

Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS) delivers the director ID service – visit their website for more information and to apply.

Directors appointed before 5 April 2022 can find out when they need to apply for their director ID on the ABRS website.

Director’s legal obligations

ASIC is responsible for enforcing director ID offences set out in the Corporations Act 2001. It is a criminal offence if you do not apply on time.

Do director IDs need to be provided to ASIC?

There is no need to provide the director ID to ASIC unless requested. There are no changes to ASIC online services (or forms) to make provision for the notification of the director ID.

New ABRS Online Dashboard

ABRS have recently published an online dashboard, which uses real time data to tell you if ABRS Online is functioning normally or experiencing issues.

Visit the ABRS online dashboard.

Natural disaster relief for affected customers

Are you or your customers facing hardship or severe disruption as a result of recent floods? ASIC may be able to review or waive late fees that a company has incurred, provide alternative payment options or help obtain copies of documents and information from our registers.

To find out more, visit our website.

Don't need your business name anymore?

If you're not using your business name anymore, you may want to consider cancelling it.

You can cancel your business name online through ASIC Connect.

Once you've applied, we will send written notification of the intention to cancel the business name to the business name holder. Cancellation will take effect one month after we send you confirmation.

If no contact email address is recorded against your business name, your notices will be sent to the address for service of documents recorded on our register.

Following cancellation, the business name will be unavailable to register for a period of four months beginning from the date of cancellation.
