Private service providers
You might receive a notice from a private service provider offering to assist with your business name renewal. This could be an accountant, solicitor, or other type of business that provides a service by using our online services to renew a business name on your behalf.
Using a private service provider is optional. If you choose to utilise their services, they will usually charge a fee beyond what we would charge. Even if a private service provider contacts you, you can still transact directly with us online for your business name.
We're aware of some emails that have been circulating lately claiming to be from ASIC and demanding payment to renew your business. If you receive one, do not open it. Just delete the email from your inbox.
When it was time to renew my business name registration, ASIC sent a renewal notice to the email address that I gave them when I registered my business name. If you don’t have an email address, they’ll send it to your service of documents address, which in my case is the café.
Because I'd checked that my details were correct using the free search, I knew I only wanted to renew my business name, so I used the Pay now service.
All you need to do is enter your Australian Business Number or ABN, or the account number from your renewal notice, and select how long you would like to renew your business name for.
I chose to renew mine for three years, because I’m pretty confident that we’ll still be around by then. You get a bit of a discount too. But, you can also renew for just one year if you prefer, which is handy for new businesses.
And then all you need to do is pay! You can either use your credit card, or request an invoice that you can pay later using BPAY or at Australia Post.
When ASIC receives your payment, they’ll email you a record of registration and the register will be updated. And that’s it!
If you also have to update your business name details at the same time as you renew, you’ll need to use ASIC Connect instead. It's available on the website along with user guides if you need some help.
