Forms and fees

Refunds

ASIC only refunds payments in some situations.

When we give refunds

If you have accidentally overpaid a fee to ASIC, you can ask us for a refund.

You can also ask us for a refund if we reject your application to register a business name or a company. These are the only fees we will consider refunding.

The refund process usually takes 21 days. If your money has not been refunded within 21 days, you can contact us online.

How to request a refund

How to request the refund depends on how you paid.

You will usually need to contact us online to ask for a refund. However, if you paid the full amount by BPAY, you will need to contact your bank.

Request a refund by applying to ASIC

You can contact ASIC for a refund if:

  • you want some of the money you paid by BPAY refunded
  • you want all of the money you paid by credit card, cheque, money order, or Post Billpay refunded.

You’ll need to contact us online to ask for a refund. Tell us:

  • the name of the entity, and its ACN or account number
  • your full name, phone number, postal address and email address
  • the payment date
  • the refund amount
  • proof of your payment.

Your proof of payment could be a screenshot of a BPAY receipt, for example, or a copy of a bank statement from where the account payable was made. If you give us a copy of a bank statement, make sure you black out all other transactions to protect your privacy. We must still be able to see the bank account name, BSB and account number.

We will usually pay your refund into your ASIC account. We may be able to pay via BPAY or EFT depending on how you made payment. We cannot pay refunds to a credit card.

Refunds by EFT

To make a refund by electronic funds transfer (EFT), we must verify your bank account details, including the account name, BSB and account number. You will need to give us a bank statement, transaction record, or a document on bank stationery that shows these details.

Black out all other transactions so other private details are hidden.

Contact your bank for BPAY payments you paid in full

If you paid the fee in full using BPAY, you will need to contact your bank or financial institution to ask them to reverse the payment.
