Renew a business name registration
Key points:
- You must renew your business name registration if you want to keep carrying on a business using that name.
- Registration can be renewed for 1 year or 3 years. If you do not renew your business name ASIC may cancel it.
Before you start
You will need your business name renewal notice. This is sent to you at least 30 days before your registration renewal is due. It’s usually sent by email.

There are two ways you can renew your business name:
If you only need to renew your business name, we recommend our ‘Business name renewal’ service.
If you also need to review and update your business name details, renew your business name and make any changes with ASIC Connect.
Renewal notice missing or lost
We send renewal notices by email. If you have not received yours, check your spam or junk folder.
If someone else registered your business name, they may have recorded their email address. If so, we will send the renewal notice to them. You should ask them if they have received it.
If we do not have an email address recorded, we will send a paper notice to your service of documents address.
If there is no email or you have lost the renewal notice, contact us online and ask us to send it again. Tell us:
- your name
- your business name
- the account number for your business name
- your email address
- your contact phone number.
You should receive your notice within 5 business days.

Start the transaction
- Enter your account number or Australian Business Number (ABN).
- Your account number is on your renewal notice. You can only enter your ABN if it’s listed against your business name on the Australian Business Register (ABR).
- Select the business name you want to renew from the list of results.
Make the changes
Choose to renew your business name for 1 year or 3 years.
Review, pay and confirm
- Check that the information displayed is correct. Declare that you are authorised to renew the business name.
- You can choose to pay now using a credit card (MasterCard or Visa). You can also request an invoice to pay the fee using BPAY or Australia Post.
- You’ll get a message confirming that your renewal has been submitted. The business name register will be updated to show your next renewal date once your payment is received.
- A record of registration will be emailed to you after payment has been processed.
Renew your business name using ASIC Connect
If you need to renew your business name and update your business name details, you can do this through ASIC Connect.
To use ASIC Connect
You will need to sign up for an ASIC Connect account and have your business name linked if you haven’t already. Find out how to do this:
Log in to your account
- Log in to ASIC Connect
- Enter your username and password.
Start the transaction
- Select the ‘Lodgements and notifications’ tab.
- Select the business name you want to change.
- Select ‘Renew business name’.
- Select the ‘Go’ button.
Renew
- You can choose to renew your business name for 1 year or 3 years.
- Select the ‘Next’ button to continue.
Check details
- Check that the information displayed is correct. If it’s not, you can select the ‘Back’ button to make any changes.
- Select the ‘Submit’ button to continue.
Declare
- Read the declaration to make sure you agree with it. You will also need to tell us that you are authorised. If you agree and are authorised, tick the boxes by selecting them.
- Then select the ‘Next’ button.
Pay
You can choose to pay now using a credit card (MasterCard or Visa). Or you can request an invoice to pay the fee using BPAY or Australia Post.
Confirm
You’ll get a message confirming that your renewal has been submitted. The Business Name Register will be updated with your next renewal date.
