Submit a business name transfer request

If your business has a new owner and they want to use the business name, you can transfer the registration. You will need to submit a request for the transfer of the business name on ASIC Connect.

Before you start

Decide if you can transfer your business name. There are rules around who can transfer business names:

Transferring a business name is a two-step process involving the current and new business name owners. The process below is for the current owner who needs to submit the transfer request. If you are the new business name owner, you will need the transfer number from the current business name owner. Follow the process for registering a business name using ASIC Connect:

To use ASIC Connect

You will need to sign up for an ASIC Connect account and have your business name linked if you haven’t already. Find out how to do this:

Steps to start a business name transfer

Log in to your account

Start transaction

Select the ‘Lodgements and notifications’ tab.
Select the business name you want to change.
Select ‘Cancel/Transfer business name’.
Select the ‘Go’ button.

Make the changes

Select the ‘I would like to transfer the business name’ option.
Select the ‘Next’ button.

Review and confirm

Check that the information displayed is correct. If it’s not, you can select the ‘Back’ button to make any changes.
Select the ‘Submit’ button to continue.

Declare and submit

Read the declaration to make sure you agree with it. You will also need to tell us that you are authorised. If you agree and are authorised, tick the boxes by selecting them.
Then select the ‘Next’ button.
You'll get a message confirming that your transfer request has been submitted.

Get transfer number and give it to the new owner

You’ll receive an email with a transfer number within 24 hours. You must give the transfer number to the new business name owner so they can register the business name in their name.

Transfer numbers for changes in business structure

If you are transferring the business name's because of a change in business structure that has resulted in a new ABN, you will use the transfer number.

Next steps

Once the request to transfer is submitted, we will cancel your registration within 28 days.

If you do not receive a transfer number

Check your email to make sure it has not gone to your spam folder.

If it is not there, contact us. Tell us you have not received your transfer number, that you have checked your spam folder and would like us to resend the email.
