How to appoint a provisional financial adviser
This user guide provides the steps required for to appoint a provisional financial adviser.
Tips:
- You will need to use ASIC Connect to appoint a provisional financial adviser.
- You can only notify up to 25 appointments per transaction.
- Further assistance about using ASIC Connect can be accessed via the Help button at the top right-hand side of the screen.
- If you're unable to select the next button, please ensure you have provided all mandatory information on the screen.

Get started
- To get started, visit the ASIC website.
- Click on the blue ASIC Connect box. This will take you to ASIC Connect.
Log in
- Go to ASIC Connect and select ‘Log in’.
- Log in using your email address and password.
- If you do not have an ASIC Connect account, select ‘Sign up’.

Home
Once you have logged in, the home screen will be visible.
- Select ‘Lodgements & Notifications’ to appoint a provisional financial adviser.
- Select the radio button next to the AFS licensee or AFS representative you want to appoint.
- In the transactions column, select Appoint Advisers/Authorised Representatives. This is the name of the transaction you use to appoint a provisional financial adviser.
- Select 'Go' to proceed.
You can appoint an authorised representative; and/or financial adviser, provisional financial adviser and time-share adviser using this form.
It is possible for an individual to be both an authorised representative and a provisional financial adviser.
Ensure you have the key information required to progress with the appoint application.
- Select 'Next' to continue.
You need to inform us if you, the licensee, are notifying of the appointment of a financial adviser or authorised representative who has been appointed by an authorised representative on your behalf.
- Select 'Yes' if the AFS licensee is telling us of an adviser or authorised representative that was appointed by one of their authorised representatives.
- Select 'No' if the AFS licensee is telling us of an appointment they made themselves.
If you selected ‘Yes’, you need to provide the representative number of the authorised representative. Please enter their number in the box. If you are not sure of their number, select the link ‘Search Authorised Representative Register’ to search for their number.
- Select 'Next' to continue.
Appoint a provisional financial adviser
- Select the type of representative you are appointing the representative as.
To find out more information about representative types, see financial advisers and authorised representatives help.
A person can be both a provisional financial adviser and an authorised representative.
- Enter the date of appointment.
The appointment date must be a date on or after the AFS licence was granted by ASIC, or, if appointed by an authorised representative, on or after the date the authorised representative was appointed by the licensee.
- Select whether ASIC has issued this representative with a representative number.
If the representative does not have a representative number, you will be asked to provide their ABN (if applicable).
- Select whether the adviser will provide advice to retail clients under the supervision of a financial adviser who meets the supervision requirements.
- Enter the year that the adviser started their year of work and training that meets the requirements.
- Select whether the adviser has been accelerated through their year of work and training.
- Select ‘Next’ to continue.
- Enter the name of the representative.
If you have provided a representative number, this information will be prepopulated.
- Enter the birth details of the representative.
- Select ‘Search Name’.
If the representative appears in the search results, you can select them. Otherwise select none of the above.
- Select ‘Next’ to continue.
Representative details
- Select whether the provisional adviser has a representative number or not.
If the adviser has previously been appointed as an authorised representative or adviser, ASIC will have allocated a representative number to them. You can check this on the Authorised Representatives Register or the Financial Advisers Register.
- Select 'Next' to continue.
Address, email address and phone number
If you have previously provided these details, the information will be prepopulated. You can update the prepopulated information by clicking on ‘Edit’. Alternatively, you can add the information for the first time by clicking on ‘Add’.
- Select the ‘Add/Edit’ button to add or update the principal place of business.
- Select ‘Save’ to save the principal place of business entered.
- Select the ‘Add/Edit’ button to add or update the email address.
- Select ‘Save’ to save the email address entered.
The email address provided will be used by ASIC to send notices and correspondence. It will not be available to the public.
- Select the ‘Add/Edit’ button to add or update the phone number.
- Select ‘Save’ to save the phone number entered.
The phone number provided may be used to contact adviser. It will not be available to the public. Providing a phone number is optional.
- Select 'Next' to continue
Authorisation details
- Select the relevant financial products that the adviser is authorised to provide personal advice to retail clients.
- Enter any further restrictions to the relevant financial products that the adviser is authorised to provide personal advice on.
- Select 'Next' to continue
Qualifications and training
- Select ‘+Add’ to add the qualification or training course information.
- Enter the name of the course, the provider/institution, the year obtained, the type of course (e.g. AQF7 Bachelor) and if the course or qualification is approved.
- Select ‘Save’ to save the qualification and training course entered.
You can add a maximum of five qualifications and training courses.
Professional memberships
- Select whether the financial adviser is a member of any professional bodies relevant to the provision of financial services.
- Select ‘+Add’ to add the professional association membership details. Select the professional body name from the drop-down box.
- Select ‘Save’ to save the professional membership.
You can add a maximum of five professional memberships.
- When all qualifications, training and professional memberships have been added, select ‘Next’ to continue.
Ability to provide tax (financial) advice services
- Select whether the adviser can provide tax (financial) advice services.
- If you select 'Yes', specify the capacity in which the financial adviser is eligible to provide tax (financial) advice services.
From 1 January 2022, to provide tax (financial) advice services to a retail client, an adviser must (a) be permitted by their AFS licensee to provide tax (financial) advice services and, (b) satisfy any requirements made by the Minister. Employment history
- Select ‘+Add’ and enter the employment history of the adviser.
Current employment is not considered part of employment history. Only previous appointments as an adviser (with a start and end date) are considered employment history.
If the adviser has been employed by the current licensee for more than five years, further employment history is not required.
If the adviser has been employed by more than one licensee during the past five years, provide employment details.
- Enter the year the financial adviser first provided personal advice.
- Select ‘Next’ to continue.
Review
Check that the information you have entered is correct.
- Select ‘+Add a representative’ to add more provisional financial advisers. You can notify up to 25 appointments per transaction.
- Select ‘Edit/Review’ if the information has been entered incorrectly for a financial adviser.
- Select ‘Remove’ to remove financial advisers.
- When all financial advisers have been added correctly, select ‘Next’ to continue.
Declarations
- Read the declaration to ensure you agree with the conditions of the transaction. If you agree, tick the boxes next to the declaration to proceed.
- Select your authority for submitting the transaction.
- Select 'Next' to continue.
Payment
You can choose to pay using a credit card, or BPAY. Alternatively, you can request an invoice to be sent to you.
- Select the 'Pay Now' option.
- Select 'Pay Now' to continue.
- Enter your credit card details.
- Select 'Submit' to process the payment.
If you want to pay at a later date, you can do so by using BPAY or requesting an invoice to be sent to you.
- Select the 'Pay Later' option.
- Select the 'Invoice' or 'BPAY' option.
If you select 'Invoice' it will be sent to:

- AFS licensee: the email address if one has been provided. Otherwise it will be sent to the service address.
- AFS representative: the email address if one has been provided. Otherwise it will be sent to the principal place of business.
- AFS licensee: the email address if one has been provided. Otherwise it will be sent to the service address.
If you select 'BPAY' you will need to print or make note of the BPAY details and process your payment.
- Select 'Pay Later'.
Confirmation
This screen confirms your transaction has been submitted.
- Select 'Print the transaction' to download a printable PDF version of the transaction.

- Select 'Home' to return to the ASIC Connect home page.
